Remembering Someone We Love

At each of my parents’ funerals, I said goodbye with the hope that we would meet again in some other time and place. That belief still brings me comfort.

I can also still feel the sadness. The hope and the tears have both remained part of my experience.

We may hold different beliefs about what happens after death. Some of us find comfort in a spiritual understanding; others in memories, shared stories, or the continuing influence of the person we loved.

I offer my belief as something meaningful to me. There is no requirement for anyone else to feel the same way, or to reach a certain point in grief by a certain time.

Sometimes remembering a small detail brings a person close: an expression they used, something they taught us, or an ordinary afternoon together.

If a memory feels welcome, we can give it room. If today is simply painful, we needn’t force it into a lesson.

A SMALL THING TO TRY

If it feels right, write down one small memory of someone you miss, or share it with a person who would understand.

Stay with this thought

The words I spoke at those funerals were a personal expression of hope. I don’t offer them as certainty about another existence.

What I can say is that my love for my parents continues to matter to me. Remembering them can bring sadness and peace at different times. I hope sharing that experience leaves room for others to describe their own.
