Step Out of the Comparison
I have sometimes looked at someone else’s home, circumstances, or abilities and wished I had what they had. It is easy for that comparison to turn into a judgment about my own life.
There will always be differences between us. We also rarely see the whole of another person’s situation.
We can acknowledge what we wish were different without using it to put ourselves down. Our circumstances may include things we chose and things we could not control.
The useful question is what we want to do from here. Is there something we would enjoy learning? A practical difficulty we could ask for help with? An ability we could put to use?
Someone else’s progress may give us an idea. It needn’t become the measure by which we dismiss our own.
We can want more for ourselves and still treat the person we are today with some kindness.
Notice one comparison that leaves you discouraged. What does it reveal about something you value? Choose a small step toward that value in your own circumstances.
Stay with this thought
Acceptance can mean acknowledging our starting point clearly. We don’t have to approve of every circumstance or abandon the changes we want.
A useful next step belongs to our own situation. It may be much smaller than someone else’s, and still be the right size for us today.
