There Is Still Something to Give

As we get older, we may wonder what comes next. A familiar job or role can end, leaving more space than we expected.

I remain interested in learning and in sharing what I have found useful. That interest gives me something to look forward to.

Purpose needn’t mean keeping the same pace or working indefinitely. It might be helping someone learn a skill, tending a garden, making something, or being a steady presence in another person’s life.

Experience can give us something to offer. We may know how to solve a practical problem, listen through a difficult conversation, or explain what we learned from a mistake.

We also get to consider what we enjoy and what our energy allows. Rest and contribution can both belong in this part of life.

Perhaps the question is not what we should still be accomplishing, but what we would welcome having a part in now.

A SMALL THING TO TRY

Think of one thing you enjoy sharing or doing. Is there a manageable way to give it a place in the coming week?

Stay with this thought

My earlier article spoke strongly in favour of continuing to contribute. I still value that idea, while leaving room for many different ways of spending later life.

Some people enjoy paid work; others find meaning in relationships, interests, or voluntary activities. We can choose a form and a pace that suit our circumstances. We don’t need to justify rest by always being productive.
