Make Room for Someone to Belong

A familiar group can feel very different to someone arriving for the first time. We know the names, the routine, and the jokes. They may be wondering where to sit or whether they are welcome to join in.

A small act of attention can make the beginning easier. We can introduce ourselves, explain what is happening, or ask if they would like some company. They no longer have to work out everything alone.

Imagine a group playing a game that one person has never tried. Inviting them to join is a start. Explaining the rules and allowing a practice round gives that invitation a more useful form.

We can ask what would help rather than deciding for them. Some people welcome guidance; others prefer a little time to watch. Respect includes leaving room for their answer, including a wish not to take part.

The group may need to adjust something too: its pace, a meeting place, or an assumption that everyone already understands. A small change can make participation easier without making the newcomer the centre of attention.

Belonging can begin with the ordinary experience of being expected, included, and taken seriously. We often have a chance to offer a little of that wherever people come together.

A SMALL THING TO TRY

At your next gathering, notice what a newcomer would need to know. Offer one introduction, explanation, or practical welcome, and let them choose how they would like to join in.

Stay with this thought

Welcome is more than a first greeting. Remembering a name, sharing the next meeting time, or asking for someone’s view can help an invitation continue beyond the first encounter.

It helps to notice the difference between including someone and speaking for them. We can make space for their preferences and contribution, rather than assuming we already know what they need or what they can do.

We need not make a grand gesture. Often the useful action is quiet: explaining a reference, making a clear introduction, or checking that a person has the information everyone else received.
